The
university was shut down on 18th October after
students went on two-day riot against the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
system that had been introduced by the varsity management in the
September-December semester. There
were damages in the university premises including the fee collection office
that was set ablaze by angry students. According
to memos in the main campus and adverts in the daily newspapers on Friday,
first year students and their diploma counterparts will report on November 2,
fourth year students on November 3, while the third year students and second
year self-sponsored (SSP) students will report on November 4. Second
year students on Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service
(KUCCPS) programme will not be affected by the reopening dates since they are
not in the learning session. During
the reporting days, all students are required to clear full amount of fees for
the semester in addition to paying Sh1800 as fine for damages caused during the
demos. “All
students will be required to sign a return to class form and classes will start
immediately,” read part of the notice. The
notice signed by acting Registrar Academic Affairs, Dr. Joash Kerongo, also
stated that school based students in all campuses will report on November 6 and
7. The
announcement has elicited reactions from some students, who said they were not
involved in the rampage despite the fines put forth for every student.
