Kisii University has announced closure of five of her
satellite campuses.
The move follows recommendations by the Commission of
University of Education (CUE) and the Advisory Committee of the Eminent Persons
(Acep).
In a newspaper advert appearing in yesterday's dailies, the
university announced the affected campuses will be closed beginning January in
a move that has sent panic among workers who had been deployed to the satellite
campuses.
A statement from the university said the decision is
contained in a strategy road map that had been initiated by the Ministry of
Education, Science and Technology.
Affected campuses
The campuses to be closed are Ogembo, Nyamira, Keroka,
Isebania and Kehancha. Affected students have been advised to join any of the
other campuses that include Kericho, Kitale, Nairobi, Kapenguria and Eldoret,
as well as the main campus.
The move is likely to affect over 3,000 students. Students
in Kehancha campus, mostly from the Kuria community, had protested against the
move, saying the decision would affect their learning programmes since a
majority of them have been commuting from their homes.
