We have been witnessing many accidents on the road to Rongai
and this has been blamed on matatus. But in as much as matatus have contributed
immensely to the chaos, the rapid growth of Ongata Rongai and Keserian towns
has a lot to do with the mayhem as the growth has not been met with expansion
of infrastructure, including roads.
The road from the junction at Bomas of Kenya remains as
narrow as it was many years ago despite the exponential increase in the number
of vehicles. As a result, vehicles, including private and government vehicles,
collide or knock down pedestrians while overtaking. Further, the heavy traffic
that has characterized the route is counter-economic growth. This has been
worsened by those who drive on the wrong side with impunity. Thus, the road is
a time-bomb unless it is expanded urgently.
