First year students from Kisii University who may have planned to graduate with ‘second degrees’ may have to think twice.

This comes after the Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof John Akama warned the freshers against irresponsible sexual activities that could lead into them graduating with ‘second degrees.’

Speaking to the freshmen at the Main Campus, the don raised concern over the high number of first-year students who lost focus on the way and ended up pregnant just a few months after joining the university.

This, according to Prof Akama, thrust young men and women into unprepared parenthood.

The warning couldn’t have come at a better time, given the university has registered rising cases of pregnancies among students over the years, especially during admission.

“You cannot serve more than one master. Your hands are now full of academic affairs. Handle the books first to get the one degree that you came for,” advised Prof Akama.

The varsity boss also spread awareness to the students about Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) in relation to Kisii County, which is one of the regions with a high rate of HIV/AIDs prevalence.

“I first advise you to abstain from sex, but if you think it is a must for you, then use protective methods so that you avoid pregnancies and contracting infections,” said Prof Akama.

About 4,000 students have been admitted to the university. Prof Akama said that his advice was meant to discourage students from engaging in activities that are destructive to their persons and well being.
