It was such a shame when police discovered that kits meant to the national athletics team to the Rio Olympics were locked up in some offices.
Dozens of boxes containing uniforms and other equipment donated to the team by well wishers were reportedly found at the National Olympics Committee of Kenya (Nock) offices in Nairobi.
Money meant for athletes’ allowances is also said to have grown wings. Yet this is not the first time this is happening. Scandals dogged the Team Kenya to London Olympics as Nock and Athletics Kenya fought for control of resources. This house must be cleaned thoroughly and sending Nock officials home or better still, to prison, is not enough. Sports CS Hassan Wario does not also deserve the office he holds. He must be removed, especially after he publicly denied the team had been mistreated while in Rio.
Athletes have been Kenya’s very important ambassadors and efforts must be made to protect the sport. It is not enough for the President to announce action will be taken against those who mismanaged the team. We want to see is the real action.
