I still remember that day as if it was yesterday; I had left my little paying job which was sustaining us and my life took a different angle. The other part of me, now my ex- was seven months pregnant. Whatever I tried didn't work. I could not afford food, pay rent or some basic commodities for a pregnant woman. I depended on my elder brother; two months later, a child was born- I was not able to raise maternity fee again my brother rescued me.

I had quit my job because of her behavior- hence the reason why I was reluctant to get another job. Situation forced me to do something, my efforts yielded nothing- while they needed more attention, especially financial, nothing worked. God knows what I went through.
During that test period, I received a call, a turning point- it changed everything; it was from my child's grand aunt who wanted them to go for a visit- I didn't hesitate, it was a reprieve. She was actually solving my problem, the only obstacle was money.

With me was a Chinese DVD player apart from 14-inch tv, that was my most precious asset, I had no option but to sell it. I said to myself, " I will buy another one. " as I handed it over to the buyer. To date am still waiting to buy another one.

On that day, the first day of the year 2009, we woke up very early. All was well along Jogoo road- there was no traffic in the city. It took us less than 30 minutes to get to Machakos country bus. With our bags, we alighted from the Matatu and walked towards one of the buses that were boarding passengers to Kakamega. As I was bargaining for bus fare, one of the touts manhandled my child and her mother- he tried to push them to another bus. I came back down and confronted him; within seconds, more touts ran to the scene.

That was when it rung my mind- I was in the middle of the war zone, I had two options, either I apply what Kalenjins are well known for, "run." which was not an option, or Pray for a miracle to happen.
Apparently it happened, police who were on their normal patrol appeared... One after the other they disappeared- the miracle at last.

That was when I realized that when at Machakos country bus you have to be extra careful, you can either end up losing everything or boarding a wrong bus.
