Cooperate societies celebrated their annual day two weeks ago.Cooperative societies are formed by members in an organization in order to pull their resources together,so that they improve their livelihood.
Elections to elect members used to be done after every three years. But the new law changed it to be a revolving elections, where members elect three officials every year for three years.
This has infringed the rights of members as the ones being elected get support from their colleagues who are not for re-elections as they campaign for them. This has made many cooperative societies have the same officials for over 10 years.
The old system where election for all the officials were done all at once, should be returned so that cooperative societies advance.Let the commissioner of cooperative change this new law as it does not add any value to the cooperative movement.
Another elephant in the room is the age of officials of cooperative societies. It is silent,so members who have retired are taking the advantage and seeking re-election year in year out. ln one society, no new members have been elected for a period of 10 years.
The unemployed and the retired, should not be elected as officials of any cooperative society if members are from an organizations (employment). ln case of damages or loss of money, such members cannot pay as they do not have salaries and their ages are advanced.
