An Administration Police officer has been arrested in Likoni, Mombasa County, on allegations of kidnapping and abducting a man and extorting Sh70,000 from him.
The 42-year-old officer was arrested Thursday alongside a man and a woman at Harambee Club in Likoni after reports that the three were soliciting money from the family of a businessman they had kidnapped on the night of July 5.
Police reports indicate that the police officer was attached to the assistant county commissioner's office in Mvita, Majengo.
The trio are alleged to have kidnapped the businessman and forced him inside the boot of a car. They demanded the ransom to be delivered in cash or else they would arraign the victim on allegations of trafficking bhang.
Likoni Deputy OCPD Anthony Shimoli said they received information that the occupants of a Probox vehicle had kidnapped the businessman. He said his unit immediately launched investigations following which they were able to trace the vehicle.
They found the three occupants and also recovered ten rolls of bhang and four sachets of heroin. Mr Shimoli said the relatives, who were receiving frequent calls from the officer and his accomplices to deliver the money, reported the matter to the police who managed to trace the suspects.
"We received information that a man whose name is withheld had been abducted and the kidnappers were demanding Sh70,000 or they would take him to court on allegations that he was trafficking bhang. That is when we launched investigations and fortunately were able to arrest the AP officer and his two accomplices," said Shimoli.
The OCPD said the drugs were found hidden in the socks of the AP officer who is said to have been missing from work for ten days prior to his arrest and was being sought by his seniors to explain why he was not at work.
