American boxing legend Muhammad Ali died on Friday after a long battle with Parkinson's disease, which was first diagnosed in 1983.
All his life, Mr Ali basked in glory on and off the boxing ring. Now that the sun has set on him, it is only imperative that we draw lessons from his life.
The condolence messages from all around the world show the influence and admiration Ali commanded. It is said he could walk into any village, city, country or continent and be recognised. Born 74 years ago, Ali was Cassius Clay, a name he changed after discovering it had slave roots.
He struggled to make a mark in an America that was choking with hatred towards African Americans. He found peace in dropping this name and went ahead to convert to Sunni Islam in 1975. This shows the importance of us digging into our roots and knowing who we are and be proud of ourselves. Ali was proud of his blackness and faith.
Ali proved that training hard makes winning easy. An accomplished poet, he often called on people to endure suffering at first but then enjoy life as champions,in success. Ali may have lost his final battle but we can all learn something from him. Hard work, principles and passion for societal good should guide whatever we do.
