Someone might be wondering how a student still in campus can be self-reliant considering the learning environment and the academic tasks that they are expected to do.

This is not forgetting their ‘tight schedules. I did a research on ways that can best help a student earn some income while still in school without interfering with their studies.

This case study is based on Kenyan University students. I also analyzed their academic calendar.

Like any other Universities or colleges in the world, Kenyan Universities are not different. If you took a walk, you will find many students ‘idling’ especially after classes either in the streets or their area of residence.

The time wasted by these students can best be used in other activities that will not only occupy their time but make their lifestyle worthwhile.

The first and the most obvious is part-time job. It’s a great way of establishing a routine and a reliable source of income but there are many other tasks you can engage in, that can help you pay for you accommodation, shopping, meals and other expenses.

Working at the school’s student union. As a student in Kenya you have a chance to vie for a sit among the many Student organisation dockets.

This is a good way of practicing leadership skills as well as earn some income from it. Student leaders earn up to Sh30, 000 a month without including sitting allowances.

As a student you can play music at functions. Yes you can create a group of people who like playing music and start making money.

Members of a Jazz band, a classical quartet, or even a modern pop can make themselves good money by playing at functions, weddings and parties.

Someone in the band can act as an agent and help in advertising by creating flyers and posters and of course advertising on social media. Depending on the size of the band, you can be paid around Sh20, 000 per performance.

Make money using Facebook and Twitter. Social media is not just a place to tell your friends where you went out drinking last night or to brag about how many followers or friends you have.

It can also provide a good platform for money making opportunities. After hitting a good number of followers or friends you can start running ads and this can help you earn good money.

You can also engage in No-risk match betting. Lots of students have genuinely made thousands of money from this technique.

You can start betting in a number of available betting sites such as Sportpesa, Betway, Elitebet and Bet365 just to mention but a few.

It’s completely legal, risk and tax free and anyone can do it.

Last but not least you can make money through online jobs such as participating in online surveys, writing articles and blogging.

A popular way for students to make money is to fill out online surveys in their free time.

Research companies are always recruiting new members to fill their surveys and test new products.

For the few minutes taken in filling a form, you can make some cash which is paid as cash or rewards.

As a student you can enrol in online sites such as www.iwriter.com which pays people for writing essays, term papers, research projects and other academic writings.

Blogging is also an option. You can create a blog or a website and start running ads. I bet you will be paid handsomely.

It’s never too late to move out of your comfort zone. Hurry today and make money while in campus. Others have done it, why not you!
