HIV is the number one youth killer

The revelation by the Health Metrics and Evaluation study that HIV and Aids is the number one killer of youth in Kenya is saddening.

According to the report, 2,531 youths aged between 13 and 19 years died in 2013 from Aids.

Worse still, the National Aids Control Council disclosed that 435,225 adolescents aged between 10 and 19 are HIV positive.

The two reports paint a gloomy picture. It is important to note that youths aged between 13 and 24 years are sexually active hence the current sad state of affairs.

Equally important to note is that most youths no longer observe abstinence, are not faithful to one’s sexual partner and don’t use condoms.

The erosion of family values and moral decadence in our society has significantly contributed to the premature death of our youth.

Supplying condoms to primary school pupils may not be a panacea to the current debilitating menace.

This is not the time to bury our heads in the sand.
