The body of a miner is being preserved at Migori County Referral Hospital after he died at Osiri gold mines in Nyatike Sub County, Migori County.

Speaking to the press, an OCPD in the area said the miner was with his colleagues mining the precious gem when he met his death.

According to an eyewitness, the man was heading out of the gold pit when he slid and fell to the bottom of the pit and died on the spot.

"He died instantly forcing me to contact the police who retrieved the body," the eyewitness said.

Gold mines, most of which are in Nyatike Sub County have been prone to accidents which usually occur during the rainy season.

Heavy rainfall has been experienced in Migori County recently. The latest death in the gold mines was reported in December last year where miners died after a ladder they were using in a gold pit cut itself loose, killing them instantly.

With the rising death incidences in the mines, miners in Nyatike are now urging the county and national government to provide them with modern technology to help them in their mining.

The miners have also appealed to the government to help in training them in modern mining methods which will improve their trade.

Addressing the mining community in a different function in Nyatike, Migori governor Zachary Obado called upon the miners to form Sacco’s which will help improve their lives.

The body of the deceased is set to undergo a post mortem and identification test.
