Ever sat back and wondered what if, what is we had elected the most unnoticed candidate? What if Mohammed Abduba Dida had become president? Would we be battling the same ghost we have been battling for the last three decades? Is the saying better the devil you know than the angel you don't know apply to the current situation in Kenya.
In 2013 most of us woke up in the wee hours of the morning to go and elect our new leaders. The polling stations were opened as early as 6:00am and some even closed after 6:00pm due to the long queues. Everyone was happy and wanted to know what the new constitution offered us. One by one we were given ballot papers ticked our preferred candidate and walked home. All the streets were empty for the next few days. Everyone was at home gazing at the television as they watched results trickling in. Finally the winners were announced, not without its fair share of drama, this is Africa.
Three four years down the line, have we moved, have we seen any change? Yes is the correct answer. Corruption is now valued in US dollars, Bloated government, Cameras on the streets, English speaking chokoras among others. Is this the Kenya we wanted? Are the leaders that we voted for the best? What if we had elected the most unpopular leaders? Would we be at the same position?
I do believe that we would have been in a better position. The devils we know have let us down, the devils we know decided to play politics and forget about the "mwananchi". The devils we know turned a blind eye on corruption. At the end of the day the devil we know is not always better than the angel we don't know.
