UON students protest over re-election of Babu Owino

University of Nairobi (UON) students are on a rampage protesting the re-election of Babu Owino as the chairman of Students’ Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU).

They are pelting stones at motorists and have burnt SONU offices.

Police are using tear gas to disperse the students and motorists are advised to avoid Uhuru Highway and Waiyaki way.

Babu Owino was re-elected as the chairman of SONU for the fourth time on April 1 and has already been sworn in.

He beat his closest contender Mike Jacobs with over 10, 000 votes to be the SONU chairman.

Police had on Saturday arrested more than 30 University of Nairobi students following the demonstrations.

Most students were puzzled by Owino's win because Mike Jacobs was leading in all campuses by midnight Friday.
