Artificial Insemination (AI) as is commonly known is an animal breeding technology that has been in existence for long and applied in many animals and even birds. The AI technology has played pivotal role in genetic improvement through selection for a given trait.
AI is introduction of semen collected from a male animal into the reproductive tract of a female artificially. It replaced the convectional mating by, say a bull with a cow. This technology has been diffused and disseminated across the globe due to its many advantages compared to the conventional breeding. AI makes it possible to use semen from a genetically superior male on many females across national and international borders. The technology also prevents spread of sexually transmitted diseases in animals, like brucellosis and is a quick way of genetic improvement.
Perhaps the greatest advantage in AI use is the financial saving. Keeping a bull just for breeding purposes has been documented as uneconomical and no farmer will ever get back money invested in such a bull. Bulls can also be dangerous to keep on a farm. With AI, one is able to store semen from a superior bull for a longer time and use it even after the donor is dead or when a superior bull becomes sick or is unable to mount a female.
The technology is widely applied in dairy production where the technology has been refined further to use of sexed semen. Artificial insemination with sexed semen increases chances of getting a desired sex- male or female.
