AFC Leopards appears to be in a form of its life, thrashing teams left right and center. With the new sponsorship from SportPesa and the acquisition of new young players, the former football giant appears to have rejuvenated and it is a force to reckon this season. Having thrashed last season winners of the GOTV shield cup Bandari united in the mid-week, AFC Leopards heads to the Mashemeji derby with a lot of enthusiasm.
The March 6th Mashemeji derby will be an exciting game to watch. Defending champions Gor Mahia are not in good form having been thrashed out of the CAF champions league against Madagascan side CNaps. The defending champions lost some of its valuable players at the end of last season, with the likes of Michael Olunga and Meddie Kagere leaving for greener pastures, and this means its striking force is not as sharp as it were last season. The combination of Jacob Keli and Enock Agwanda is not very much effective, and will not be a big threat to their defense of AFC Leopards.
Ingwe on the other hand have been boosted with the signing of a new coach, Ivan Minnaert who appears to be the hope and salvation of AFC Leopards. The New Sponsorship deal from SportPesa will also salvage the 2nd most successful club in the country, and it is a wakening call for the fallen giants. The sponsorship can also help solve the leadership wrangles in the club, especially after it seems that fans appear to have accepted Dan Mule as their chairman.
The new players in AFC Leopards appear to have a zeal for wins, the completely new squad that beat Bandari in the mid-week has started to attact fans back into the stadiums to watch games, which motivates the players to perform. Last season the club had the poor run, finishing way below the top four, and this had pushed away many fans from watching games. However, the situation appears to be shifting. AFC Leopard are second on the log with 7 points after 3 games while Gor Mahia are well behind them having registered two draws in two games.
The clash on Sunday will be a clash of the Titans. fans are expected to throl in the stadium to support their respective teams and the environment will be tense. We hope there will be no hooliganism and fans will enjoy the game. This derby of course is always accompanied with tension and each team trying to show their superiority, which is the sweetness of a football match.
Gor Mahia have to prove their worth as defending champions while AFC Leopards will seek to continue with their relatively good performance this season. This is a must watch game.
