Man accused of killing grandparents charged

A man who allegedly murdered his elderly grandparents in cold blood last week in Subukia was yesterday morning arrested.

Police have been pursuing 23-year-old Moses Kamau Githuku, who was later charged in a Nakuru court, since Tuesday last week.

The bodies of 86-year-old Anne Njeri and Peter Kabogo, 90, who lived in Gatongu village were discovered a day after they were killed.

Police said the accused was identified by residents in Kabazia, several kilometres away from where he allegedly committed the crime.

Witnesses said the suspect had gone to a butchery at Kabazia centre to buy meat.

Mr Kamau was to take plea over the twin murders but the prosecution sought more time to prepare.

Senior Principal Magistrate Nyakundi Maroro deferred Kamau's plea until the duty judge sits next week.

Shocked residents said the incident was tragic.

It is believed that Kamau attacked his grandparents at night while they were asleep.

HEAVY DOWNPOUR

The following morning, a child testified that Kamau had ordered his grandmother to undress and warned her not scream during the night marked by a heavy downpour.

Witnesses say he dug a hole in the mud-walled house which he used to enter.

The accused allegedly demanded for money he believed the couple had received from relatives who had visited them.

He is suspected to have killed the two after raping the elder grandmother.

But dressed in a multi-coloured jacket and baggy jeans yesterday while in the Nakuru court, Kamau appeared composed, and responded coherently and confidently when asked whether he had any objection to his continued remand.

He did not object the detention. Mr Nyakundi ordered that the accused be remanded at Kirengera Police Station until December 30.
