CORD leader Raila Odinga wants the Jubilee government to account for Sh40 billion drawn from the Euro bond proceeds.
He also wants Treasury CS Henry Rotich to explain how the $2 billion borrowed from the Euro bond was spent, dismissing previous government statements that the cash was spent on infrastructure. Speaking at Kingandole Secondary School in Butula constituency, Busia County, Raila said the Euro bond cash can pay for the construction of 30 roads built to the scale of the Thika Superhighway.
“As an engineer, I know what that money can do . . . the whole country could have felt its impact,” he said.
The former Prime Minister faulted the Jubilee government over high taxes imposed on basic commodities. The CORD leader, who was accompanied by MPs Geofrey Odanga (Matayos), Silvance Osele (Kabondo Kaspul), Busia Deputy Governor Kizito Wangalwa and Governor Sospeter Ojaamong, accused the Uhuru administration mistreating teachers by refusing to pay their September salaries.
“Uhuru gave direction that teachers must be paid their dues, the new Cabinet Secretary too gave the same directive. What is it with the TSC?” Raila posed, in reaction to reports that the tutors' employers had gone to court challenging an order that it pays teachers.
To ensure that teachers are paid, CORD would get involved in pushing for the payment, said Osele. “Uhuru gave a directive, the CS reaffirmed it then TSC turns around and goes to court. Who is lying? They are giving with the left hand and taking away with the right one. They are playing pingpong.” Odanga then challenged the President to ensure his directive was effected.
