Arrest warrant issued for Mwingi Central MP Joe Mutambu

Nairobi, Kenya: Kibera Chief Magistrate court has issued an arrest warrant for Mwingi Central MP Joe Mutambu after he failed to attend court on Thursday.

The MP was set to appear in court to answer to charges of assaulting Helicopter of Christ founder Bishop Thomas Wahome.

Last week, the legislator appeared before Kibera Principal Magistrate Benard Ochoi and denied the charges.

He was freed on a Sh50, 000 surety bond or an alternative cash bail of Sh20, 000.

Wahome claims that on September 21, two police officers accompanied him to go and retrieve his lorry from the MP’s office located along Muchai drive in Kilimani.

He says Mutambu had borrowed a lorry from him and refused to hand it back. 

“I went with police to repossess the lorry but he descended on me with kicks and blows. He even pointed his gun at me and threatened to shoot me,” says Wahome.

He claims the legislator then detained him together with the two Criminal Investigations officers, who had accompanied him for more than five hours.

The added that the officers called Kilimani DCIO Phylis Kanina, who sent a team of flying squad officers, to release them.

The officers arrested Mutambu and he was arraigned in court the next day and charged with assault.

 The medical examination report signed by a Doctor Mureithi indicates Wahome suffered injuries in the neck and was treated for severe headache, nose bleeding, swollen upper eye lid, bruises in the neck and chest pain on September 21.

When reached for comment on the arrest warrant issue, Mutambu didn’t respond to text messages or calls.
