The sweet memories of the just-concluded world athletics championships in Beijing will forever remain etched in the memories of many Kenyans. I can’t recollect any other time I have ever smiled for a whole week.

The championships started on a low key for Team Kenya but as time went by, our athletes gained momentum and were neck-and-neck with their rivals. Well, that was evident in the women’s 10,000 metres, when Vivian Cheruiyot lifted our spirits when she won the first gold medal.

The world was taken aback by the Kenyan quartet led by the legendary Ezekiel Kemboi when they displayed sheer class by clinching all the medals on offer in the 3,000m Steeplechase. That victory made my mother go berserk with cries of joy. Kenya’s beloved YouTube man, Julius Yego, silenced the entire world when he defied all odds to become the first Kenyan to win a gold medal in a field event.

David Rudisha’s performance was outstanding in the men’s 800 metres.

Team Kenya resolved to fire on all cylinders and the outcome was awe-inspiring. They made us feel on top of the world. Against all odds, team Kenya emerged the overall winner of the championship since its inception 28 years ago.
