A new pram bought for an unborn baby girl saved the life of her big brother in a horrific car crash.

Kayci, aged 20 months, escaped without serious injury when the pram in the boot of their Fiat Punto took the full force of the impact of a smash from behind, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Mum Vanessa Stansfield, her partner Marcel Blake and their son were hit by a dark red Honda Civic in Ashton, Greater Manchester yesterday at 7.30pm.

The Civic then flipped through the air and landed on the other side of the road. Four cars were damaged in the crash.

Firefighters said the new pram stopped Kayci from being crushed while Vanessa, who is 24 weeks pregnant, and Marcel also escaped serious injury.

Vanessa, 23, was also taken to hospital for checks and has been told her unborn baby is doing fine.

The driver of the Honda Civic, a 25-year-old man, was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

The family are hoping to trace a man who risked his life to climb into the wreckage of the car and pull Kayci to safety when it was feared the vehicle was about to explode.

Kayci was treated for scratches caused by broken glass.

Marcel, 20, suffered a black eye and cuts to his head, arms and legs.

Vanessa today told how the family felt lucky to be alive.

She said, “We had just come out of Asda, turned right and were due to turn right again to go towards Stalybridge on Cavendish Street.

“We were parked at the lights with about five or six other cars.

“I was literally about to say ‘what the hell is that noise?’ we could hear getting closer, but I had no time to speak and the airbags were up and the car was turning around.

“When we got out we couldn’t even see the car that had hit us because it was on the other side of the road.

“I just remember collapsing into the arms of a woman in a pink top. I was so confused and my partner could barely walk.

“Someone was shouting that the car was going to set on fire. A man rescued our little boy because both of the front seats were jammed.

“This man just dived into the car, into the back, and got my son out. It was amazing.

“We are hoping to trace him to say thank you.

“We’d also just bought a new pram and the firefighters said that had probably saved my little boy from being crushed.

“There were people everywhere, it was like nothing I’ve ever seen before.

“Since then I’ve just been thinking if we hadn’t been there it could have been another family hit or what if we’d been another five minutes in Asda.

“We just feel lucky to be alive.”

Passers-by rushed to help after the horror smash with emergency services on the scene in minutes.

The major road through Ashton town centre was closed for several hours as wreckage was removed.

Police said this morning that investigations into the crash were ongoing.

An update on the Honda driver’s condition is expected later today.
