Murang'a led Mt Kenya region in pouring 4 million litres of illicit liquor

MURANG'A: Five counties in Mt Kenya region destroyed in excess of four million litres of illicit liquor in the latest report by department of interior and national coordination department.

In the report, Kigumo constituency led with destruction of assorted 1,058,422 litres of illicit brews in the month of June this year.

Counties of Nyandarua and Nyeri are detailed to had performed poorly as they only managed to destroy 152,392 litres and 248,277 litres respectively during the operation.

Murang'a County which was perceived to have had been the major market in second generation brews saw destruction of 2,045,211 litres closely followed by Kirinyaga 1,372,752 litres.

According to figures obtained, Kigumo constituency led in destruction of more than 1,058,422 litres of second generation brews.

Central regional Interior Coordinator Mr Michael Tialal has raised concerns that county governments have continued licensing of more liquor outlets thus frustrating war on alcoholism.

Kigumo MP Jamleck Kamau in the report is rated to have led the war in the region as his constituency recorded the highest destruction of illicit brews.

"The war spearheaded by the MPs achieved a lot as the public showed their support due to trust they have with their elected leaders," said Kamau.

On Saturday, Kamau said war against killer brews will not be relented to safe the future generation.

The presidential directive received overwhelming backing from the residents of Murang'a County which had been highly affected by illicit brews," said Kamau.

"The second phase of the programme is to help the youth who had been affected by alcoholism fully recovers," said Kigumo MP.

On his part, Murang'a governor Mwangi wa Iria said war of illicit brews was achieved as all leaders participated and joined hands.

He said only outlets that meets the conditions will be licensed and they will be regularly monitored by the county government officials.
