State warns individuals making substandard animal feeds

The government has issued a warning to rogue animal feed makers.

Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Principal Secretary Fred Segor said the government will investigate how rogue animal feeds sneak substandard feed into the market and those found guilty will face the full force of the law.

Mr Segor said this when he toured Githunguri Dairy Cooperative Society last week.

He said the Ministry will partner with Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) to close down all processing plants manufacturing substandard animal feeds and selling it to unsuspecting farmers.

“I will take it upon myself to follow up on the issue and those found guilty will be arrested and charged,” said Segor.

The PS was responding to Githunguri Daily Cooperative Society chairman Charles Mukora who said one of the main challenges farmers are facing is substandard animals feeds.

“After complains from farmers we took samples to Kebs and we found most animal feeds in the market are substandard,” said Mukora.

Ngewa MCA Karungo wa Thang’wa said county and national government should collaborate with the society and start animal feeds processing companies to save farmers from being exploited by illegal processors.

He challenged dairy farmers to maximise on their milk production to meet growing demand.

“The current milk production in the country is 1.2 million litres per day. On our part, we are producing 280,000 litres per day. But with the increasing population we need to up our game,” he said.
