A man collapsed and died on the spot during a football match between Bunge FC and Wazee FC at Makhokho High School in Ikolomani over the weekend.
Witness said Vitalis Likami had just been brought in as a substitute for the Ikolomani based Wazee team when he collapsed.
“We have been playing football together for over 20 years. We had come to interact with our legislators and it was an entertaining experience.
“He never showed any signs of sickness or fatigue. After half time he was brought in,” said Edwin Sore, another player.
Mr Likami was rushed to Igukhu Sub-county Hospital for medical checkup but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The 43-year-old was a biology and agriculture teacher and dean of studies at Chamakanga Girls Secondary School in Vihiga County.
A nurse at the hospital who is not authorised to speak to the Press said the hospital is yet to determine the cause of the death and was waiting for a post mortem results.
“According to what we were told, he collapsed while playing football. We still don’t know whether it was a brain damage or cardiac arrest as some claim,” she said.
Chamakanga Girls Principal Jane Demesi described the father of five as a dedicated and hardworking teacher.
Bunge FC, a team featuring MPs, won the match 1-0, with a goal scored by MP Bernard Shinali.
The body of the deceased is lying at the Kakamega County General Hospital.
