Eldoret, Kenya: A management official at the University of Eldoret died under mysterious circumstances on Thursday night, shocking the institution's fraternity.
The official was among nine others who were recently suspended by the university council over the recent spate of chaos that has marred the institution, leading to its indefinite closure about two weeks ago.
The deceased, Dr Mary Lopokoyit, was the registrar planning at the university. She is reported to have developed health complications while driving herself home to Kimumu estate within the outskirts of Eldoret town, before she was rushed to the Eldoret Hospital by a Good Samaritan.
Students as well as the institution's officials gathered at the hospital after news of her demise spread. Speaking at the hospital, Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno who was accompanied by Member of County Assembly Rebecca Chepchirchir, said there is need for an urgent and conclusive investigation to ascertain the cause of the don's death.
"She was a hardworking official and a mentor to all. Her death should not be taken lightly," said Mr Chemno.
Chemno challenged the Jubilee leadership to resolve issues affecting the university, since its students are yet to resume learning. "The university fraternity should be calm and the Government should find a lasting solution to the woes affecting the institution," he said.
