Two schools closed after students fight

Two secondary schools in Narok South have been closed following a clash between two student camps.

Enelerai and Olchorro Secondary schools were closed last Sunday and Friday respectively.

The closure means Form Four students in the schools did not sit the mock examinations that commenced Monday.

At Enelerai, a camp that had been defeated in a student leaders' election attacked the one that won.

Taking control

"The losers did not accept the results and accused the others of having rigged the elections. Efforts by the school administration to resolve the differences bore no fruit," said a student who requested anonymity.

The students fought on Saturday night and the school was closed on Sunday morning.

And at Olchorro, the learners fought over a meeting their head teacher had with a section of students.

Eight students were injured in the melee and were admitted to hospital.

In a charged meeting attended by County Director of Education Abdihamid Maalim, parents demanded that the Olchorro head teacher be transferred and disciplinary action be taken against him for not taking control of the situation.

Parents Teachers Association Chair Paul Mutai claimed the head teacher had chosen a few students as his informers and was having a meeting with them when the other students stormed the meeting and demanded to know what they were discussing.

Sub-county Director of Education Charles Nyakundi said the school has been closed for two weeks and the head teacher suspended.

"The tension among the students was high and we resolved to close the institution so as to allow it to come down," said Mr Nyakundi adding that the school's board of management's term had expired.
