A Nyeri court yesterday heard the case of a man accused of being in illegal possession of wildlife trophies at the Aberdare National Park.

Charles Maina Mathenge appeared before Resident Magistrate John Aringo charged with being possession of two elephant tusks, entering the national park without authorisation, carrying a spear into a protected area and hunting an elephant for sport.

The court had initially released Maina on a Sh1,000,000 bond which he was unable to raise but he later successfully requested for its reduction to Sh300,000 bond and a cash bail of a similar amount.

The court heard testimony from two Kenya Wildlife Service rangers who detailed how a search for poachers led them to the accused's house where the tusks were recovered.

The case will resume on July 15.
