A woman who was arrested on Monday at the gates of Milimani Law Courts for allegedly being in possession of bhang has been charged before a Nairobi court.
Sylvia Moonuh Omenya was on Tuesday arraigned before Nairobi Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo, where she was accused of being in possession of 100 rolls of bhang. However, she denied the charges.
The court heard that on June 29 at the Milimani Law Courts, Ms Omenya was found in possession bhang, contrary to the law.
It is alleged that she was arrested by security guards at the courts’ gates during a routine search conducted on all members of the public entering the premises.
She is said to have carried the bhang in a white paper bag and upon being asked what it contained, she claimed it was baby food. It is alleged that a thorough search revealed that the bag contained bhang, about 60 cigarettes and tobacco in powder form.
Omenya denied knowing what was in the paper bag and was taken to Central Police station for further investigations.
Meanwhile, a person suspected to be Omenya’s accomplice was also charged with being in possession of an illicit drug. Victor Odhiambo Juma denied before the same court being in possession of 150 rolls of bhang. He was also arrested at the Milimani Law Courts gates after a routine search by the security guards.
They were both released on a cash bail of Sh50,000 with an alternative bond of Sh200,000 and one surety of a similar amount each.
The cases will be heard on August 18.
