Kenya: Retired President Daniel arap Moi has asked the Government to consider establishing more girls secondary schools across the country.
The former Head of State said parents and education stakeholders need to take girl child education more seriously by deploying more resources for their benefit.
Speaking at Emining Boys High School in Baringo County during a prize giving and prayer day over the weekend, Moi said he was not fully satisfied with the manner in which girls were being handled in matters education.
"When you educate a boy, you educate an individual, but when you educate a girl, then you are educating a family," said the former Head of State.
Moi caused laughter when he said it would be detrimental for the society to neglect the girl child and educate boys, who will find no one to marry after attending the best schools in the world.
"Yes, let us say people have refused to listen and the boys are well educated, enrolled in the best universities in the globe and back to their respective villages, who will they marry?" Moi posed. He called on residents of Emining to source for extra space and funds to establish another girls' school.
Moi, who was the chief guest during the prize giving ceremony to award last year's Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education candidates, said the country's population was increasing at a very high rate and more learning infrastructure must be put in place.
He also challenged women across the country to wake up and take up serious positions both nationally and in the counties, saying there were no reserved positions for men.
He said he was delighted to see women who have scaled educational and employment ranks and performed exceptionally well.
