Kofi Annan’s message to Nigeria ahead of Saturday’s elections

Nigeria: With just hours to Nigeria’s elections former UN Secretary General,Kofi Annan has pleaded with the people of Nigeria to conduct peaceful elections to show the rest of the world  that Africa’s biggest nation has come of age.

Annan has called on supporters of the two aspirants, President Jonathan and General Buhari to refrain from violence adding that the two have constantly reminded Nigerians that they are merely rivals and not enemies.

“By publicly reaffirming their commitment to the Abuja Accord, to free, fair and credible elections, the two leading candidates aspire to serve their country and the nation will have to stand united both during and after the elections.” Says Annan.

He notes that Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has worked hard to prepare the upcoming elections, which are also most challenging on the continent due to Nigeria’s size and complexity.

However the former UN Chief emphasizes on the responsibility for free, fair and peaceful elections does not lie with INEC alone but all stakeholders have a role to play in ensuring that the elections come off in the best conditions.

“The candidates today (Friday) have taken an important step in the right direction. They must also acknowledge that defeat is a possibility. Should disputes arise, they must be settled through appropriate and peaceful means.” Reads the statement.

Annan has also asked security forces to ensure the security and neutrality of the process is in accordance with the constitution. He further warns the media to report on tomorrow’s elections adhering to the Nigerian Media Code of Election Coverage or face credible sanctions.

“As a West African, I am looking to you to show the world what Africa’s biggest nation can accomplish when it sets its mind to it. Let’s make Africa proud.” Remarks Koffi Annan.
