Rowdy youths disrupt Siaya Assembly proceedings

SIAYA: A county assembly sitting was on Wednesday disrupted by rowdy youths, forcing the speaker to adjourn the session.

The chaos broke out when youths seated at the public gallery started shouting as the MCAs were discussing a Public Accounts Committee report on the defunct local authorities.

Two MCAs, Joseph Agoko (Sidindi) and Walter Okelo (youth representative), were roughed up, with the youth accusing Agoko of being used to paralyse county government operations.

The youths attacked Agoko as he went to the toilet, before the assembly staff and security officers rescued him.

Mr Okelo was attacked over an alleged post on his Facebook wall, claiming goons had invaded the assembly.

IMPEACHMENT MOTION

Assembly Speaker George Okode said the sitting was being chaired by his Deputy Stephen Kadera when the commotion ensued.

"I don't think the disorder was as a result of what was being discussed in the House," said Okode.

The Standard, however, established the youths had come to the assembly after rumours circulated that an impeachment motion against Governor Cornel Rasanga was to be tabled.

Speaking to journalists after adjourning the House, Okode said chaos was as a result of a misunderstanding, which he said would be resolved in a speaker's 'Kamukunji'.

"Any member of the public who feels dissatisfied with any of the assembly's deliberations should forward a petition to the assembly and not attack members," said Okode.

Elsewhere, Deputy Governor Wilson Ouma Onyango has asked area leaders to tone down political rhetoric and focus on development.

"We must work together to transform the lives of the people," he said in Bondo.
