Kenyans will be eager to see whether hundreds of millions of shillings invested to install CCTV cameras in Nairobi will pay off following yesterday’s killing of Kabete MP George Muchai.

It remains to be seen whether the cameras, installed in the city’s Central Business District and other areas, will play a critical role in the arrest of those behind the murder of Muchai, his two bodyguards and driver.

Nairobi County Government installed CCTV cameras in the CBD and promised to move to residential areas in the fight against crime.

The County Government yesterday confirmed that the CCTV cameras just a few metres from the scene of the crime were operational.

Governor Evans Kidero said the surveillance cameras installed by his administration last year are working.

He pointed out that the number of CCTV cameras currently stands at 49 and are spread across the Central Business District.

“The CCTV cameras are working and I am sure the police are already reviewing the footage because they get a direct feed of the footage from the cameras. Hopefully, they will be able to find out who the assailants were,” said Kidero.

Nairobi County Speaker Alex ole Magelo also said the cameras were working and expressed confidence that they would play a critical role in police investigations.

“The CCTV cameras will help us know what happened and who the killers are. County government should have all the corners of Nairobi cctv secured and not just some parts of the city because Kenyans must be protected,” he said.

The attackers intercepted the MP’s car about 3 am before opening fire and killing all the occupants of the vehicle at Kenyatta Avenue- Uhuru Highway roundabout.

The four were in the same sport utility vehicle ahead of another vehicle carrying family members, including the MP’s wife and a daughter. The bodies of the four had bullet wounds in the head and chest. They were taken to Lee Funeral Home at 6.30am.

Police indicated that they are waiting to talk to the newspaper vendor who witnessed the shooting. Central OCDP Paul Wanjama further said they will also talk to the security officer of Galileo, an entertainment joint where Muchai had visited earlier.

“We are also reviewing CCTV footage from the scene,” added the OCPD.

In December 2013, President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto officially opened Nairobi’s new command centre to coordinate traffic operations and crime management using CCTV cameras.
