As I take the sharp bend, a sly grin spreads across my face, ahead lies a watery muddy track; time to get dirty!

Gleefully I step on the gas and the speedometer needle shoots up, all 30Km/hr of it. There is mud all over the Magibuggy, on the passenger seat, my overalls fully soaked in the muddy goo. And yet I cannot wipe the smile of my face feeling all Lewis Hamilton up on the track.

Chaka Ranch is one of the few places where mud is fun!

Chaka Ranch Leisure Park is located in Chaka town close to Kiganjo, Nyeri around 2Km off the Nyeri Nanyuki Highway.

I am safely harnessed in my Magibuggy bike, my helmet well fitted and the goggles as required. All this is fitted by an instructor. The lengths they go to in order to ensure safety of the rider is impressive.

Sure you have to sign an indemnity form before getting on the ride but it was comforting seeing so many instructors armed with walkie talkies taking their jobs very seriously.

I choose the MagiBuggy bike because it gave me a sense of comfort. They described it as street legal and non-competitive; sounded good to me

The courageous ones among us took the senior quad bikes.

But for those looking for more than a rush, there is the Racing Buggy TT. Competitive time trial on a custom made race track.

The kids are well catered for with totos quad bikes, junior quad bikes and junior buggies. These can be ridden by kids from as young as 5 years all the way to 13 years old. A 30 minute ride in these bikes will range from Sh1,000 to Sh2,500. The competitive bikes will cost Sh5,000.

Our train of bikes was led by an escort bike. Keeping us in check while directing us through marsh, dry land and gravel.

Accelerating when necessary and waiting when part of our 15 bike train was lagging behind.

After the 30 minute ride, we drove back to the finish line where we handed over, albeit begrudgingly, our bikes and shed our muddied clothes.

We had developed an appetite and food was the only thing on our minds.

Enter the food court, an expansive facility with an assortment of delicacies. The seating offers a stunning view of Mt Kenya and the rolling hills of the central region.

We were treated to copious amounts of Nyama Choma (roast meat), roast chicken, Ugali, Mukimo with an array of fresh vegetable salad.

Despite opening its doors to the public a few months ago, the park has been swarming with families, adrenaline junkies and tourists.

Yet that is not all this scenic location has to offer. There is also a big kid’s playpen with plenty of activities for the children.

A sports bar is also available for those who would like catch up with the games.

Chaka Ranch is a getaway with all the thrills and amenities of modern life. Like being away from home with all the comforts of home.

Yet the sights, scenes and experiences at the Chaka Ranch are unrivalled. Family fun, great food and incredible views, is why a 2 hour drive to Chaka is not only worth it, it is priceless.

Before you leave:

Remember that cash payments are not accepted on the Ranch. MPESA and debit/credit card payments are the only accepted form of payment.

Make sure you have a pair of closed shoes to wear for the rides.
