Traffic officer arrested over alleged Sh5,000 bribe

A senior traffic police officer risks prosecution for soliciting a Sh5,000 bribe in order to release a vehicle that had been impounded.

The officer was arrested last week by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission detectives and booked at the Kisumu's Railways police station for several hours before being released on a free bond.

He had been summoned to the regional traffic police office following a complaint lodged against him.

Upon being informed of his offence, the anti-corruption officers were called in and was arrested.

According to an EACC detective aware of the arrest, the officer would be arraigned in court on December 17, to answer to charges of graft.

"We anticipate to get communication from the Office of Director of Public Prosecutions for us to proceed with the case," said the detective.

Yassin Amaro, a spokesperson with EACC confirmed the arrest of the officer. "The commission had pledged to be vigilant on graft involving police officers. Any bribery committed on the road would not go unpunished," said Mr Amaro.
