NANDI, KENYA: The dropping of charges against President Uhuru Kenyatta by the ICC has been received with excitement by leaders in the North Rift region.
Led by Nandi Senator Stephen Sang and Major John Seii, they expressed confidence that remaining cases against two Kenyans will also be withdrawn.
Nandi Senator Mr Stephen Sang and Major John Seii, the Emeritus chairman of Kalenjin council of elders said that they were excited and happy with the dropping of charges against President Uhuru.
"I am very excited that the court has reconciled itself with reality that Kenyan cases were not properly investigated and not credible. The remaining cases will crumble down too," said Sang.
The Senator said the ICC cases 'started crumbling from the start after former Minister Henry Kosgey and former Police commissioner Hussein Ali's cases failed to be confirmed and later the dropping of the case against Francis Muthaura'.
"The president is now a free person, citizen and can freely run the country. The other remaining cases will too come to an end. These cases are just like two sides of a single coin and will equally come down due to lack of credible evidence and witnesses," said Sang.
Sang who spoke to The Standard on telephone after the charges were dropped said that energies are now focused towards the dropping of Deputy President William Ruto and Joshua Sang cases.
"The Assembly of State Parties to the Rome statute meets next week in New York and the government will be represented. Focus will be to push for parties to carry out an audit regarding credibility on investigations, evidence and witnesses on the Kenyan cases," said Sang.
The Senator said some witnesses even confessed that they were induced, coached and promised money to testify.
Sang said: "The withdrawal of charges against President Uhuru is a win for Jubilee and the country at large. We are certain Uhuru, Ruto and Sang are innocent".
He said the country will remain united and Jubilee will be firm adding that detractors who would want to sow seeds of discord and create an impression that Jubilee alliance will be divided will not succeed.
Elisha Busienei, the MP for Turbo in Uasin Gishu County said: "I thank the prosecution for dropping charges against President Uhuru. I am sure it is just a matter of time before charges against Ruto will follow suit by being dropped".
