General Service Unit officers to face murder charges

Nairobi, Kenya: Two General Service Unit  (GSU) suspected to have murdered a businessman will undergo mental check-up before pleading to the charges.

The two officers Edward Emusinge Nandukule and Joel Kimathi Kilaku attached to the Reece Company based in Ruiru have been accused of murdering a scrap metal trader Wilberforce Wamori Wakaba.

"On the October 24, 2014 at Kasarani area in Kasarani district within Nairobi county,  Nandukule and Kilaku murdered Wakaba," the charge sheet read in part.

High Court Judge Jesse Lessit who deferred the plea to November 20, 2014, noted that there was no mental report of the two accused security officers facing the murder charge and directed that they undergo the check before the case proceeds.

According to the court documents, the deceased was driving from Githurai  45 while carrying scrap metal heading to Huruma Estate when he was stopped by a GK Land Cruiser and informed that he was under arrest.

The two GSU who arrested the deceased had identified themselves as officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and directed the businessman to the CID headquarters.

But on his way to CID headquarter, they ordered the businessman to divert to Kasarani Sport Ground where the officers allegedly demanded Sh300, 000 and threatened him of dire consequences of being in possession of copper.

According to the prosecution the deceased had argued that he did not have the Sh300, 000 and what he could raise was Sh30, 000 if given time as he had Sh15, 000 only in his possession.

The GSU are said to have assaulted the businessman after he allegedly failed to yield to their bribe demands and went ahead to confiscate the scrap metal that the businessman was carrying and loaded them in the GK vehicle.
