Former Member of Parliament for Imenti Central Jenaro Gituma has died.
His brother Leonard Murithi said Mr Gituma, who was at one time also the chairman of the Cotton Board of Kenya, died on Sunday morning at the Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi after a long illness.
Gituma was the first post-independence MP for Meru West, now known as Imenti Central constituency.
Following his demise Meru leaders led by Senator Kiraitu Murungi sent their condolences to the family.
“He was a good leader who shunned the dirty politics of clan chauvinism. May God raise more of those leaders in our country,” Mr Murungi said.
Brilliant style
Gideon Mwiti, the current MP, said Gituma would be remembered for the many development projects he started in the region.
Former MP Gitobu Imanyara said he learnt with sadness the passing of the pioneer MP.
Mr Imanyara said during his service as MP, Gituma spearheaded many development projects in the constituency for which he will be long remembered, especially by cotton farmers.
“He will be remembered for his spirited campaign against the politics of negative clanism that have characterised Central Imenti since independence. May his soul rest in peace,” Imanyara said.
Senator Julius Muthamia praised Gituma as a professional politician who had a brilliant leadership style.
