Outlets selling wines, spirits shut down in Nandi as death toll from killer brew rise to nine

Kapsabet, Kenya: All alcohol outlets selling wines and spirits in Nandi County have been shut down after the death of nine people who consumed illicit brew.

National Authority Against Drugs and Alcohol Abuse (Nacada) CEO William Okedi, who visited Kapsabet hospital, said the closing down of the premises was a measure to contain the spread of the lethal brew.

Sixteen people are still admitted at Kapsabet Hospital.

Okedi further said Nacada will carry out a one week mobilization campaign in the six sub-counties in Nandi to offer residents with hands on information on how to watch out for harmful elements in alcohol they consume for personal safety.

Samples of the killer brew have been taken to the government laboratory to ascertain the contents.

The Nacada boss also instructed District Alcohol Licensing Committees, county commissioner and the county government to undertake deeper and rapid inspections of bars and liquor operating outlets in a bid to rule out possibilities of fresh poisoning.

Nandi-Hills MP Alfred Keter, who accompanied the Nacada boss, called on the Anti-Counterfeit Agency and the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) to move with speed to tame counnterfeit products.
