Our world is full of wonders. Mombasa residents are currently complaining of chilly spells. A couple of months ago in March, we were complaining of hot spells. It was as if Mombasa was about lit up into a ball of fire. I even saw Salome work bear chests as the scorching sun added to the severe humidity. We slept windows and doors open, and at times slept out on the open verandas.
Today? For the past one week, fans have been switched off. All cooling systems have been put to rest. Windows and doors sealed. Why? "Its too cold. Its too cold - where can we take refuge of this severe cold?" I hear some curse the current weather condition. Beaches are no no gone zones, if you get there you shiver. Blankets. Woollen and cotton materials are selling like hot cake.
Mombasa has tropical savanna climate. The dry winter, and cold season. The chilly weather conditions start from the mid June and last up to around mid September. So we've long way to go before.
Last Sunday we saw Mombasa church-goers able to wear their Sunday best - in smart ties and coats.
But as some continued to "curse", some in churches prayed the current weather should prevail all year round.
I concur with most of the residents that this year the weather is extremely cold in Mombasa.
Perhaps weatherman will tell us what's happening with the ongoing unusual weather phenomenon in Mombasa.
