Kenya bans German beer brand

The Ministry of Health has banned the sale of an imported beer brand in Kenya. The Director of Public Health Kepha Ombacho has directed that all  Burg Premium Extra liquor in the market be confiscated.

In a circular, the director noted that the lager beer, which is packed in cans, does not have an expiry date as required by law.

“The alcoholic beverage that is brewed in Germany contravenes the provisions of the Foods, Drugs and Chemical Substances act,” he said.

Ombacho directed his officers to seize the product and take legal action against all traders found selling it.

“The ministry shall be releasing more alcoholic beverages that have failed to meet that set standards in due course,” he said.

Nakuru County public health officer Samuel King’ori confirmed receiving the circular and revealed that they had started seizing the beer.

He called on members of the public to be careful with the products that they consume and to always check the expiry dates. “Many cases of food poisoning are caused by the consumption of expired products and we are keen to remove this beer product from the market,” he said yesterday.
