Kenya: Sacked police officers have been warned against clinging on to their offices after failing the vetting exercise.

The National Police Service Commission yesterday said some of the officers recommended for removal had refused to hand over their offices and Government equipment and instead had resorted to threatening their juniors.

Commission Chairman Johnston Kavuludi cited a case of a police commander found unsuitable last week and removed from the service. He said the officer sent an SMS to his juniors saying he had not left the office and he remained in charge.

“He even said he would continue to chair the promotion boards before he receives his official letter of retirement,” said Kavuludi.

Kavuludi told the officers affected to accept their verdict and challenged those disagreeing with it to appeal or move to court.

Some 12 officers were removed from the service while nine will undergo further probe.

Some 145 officers of the ranks of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police were found suitable and retained.

He made the revelations during a sensitisation programme for all OCPDs and their deputies and other officers of the ranks of Senior Superintendent of Police and Superintendent of Police in Nairobi at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies.

OCPDs’ vetting

He said despite the ongoing campaigns, some officers still conduct themselves in an unacceptable manner that lowers the image and dignity of the service.

“Most complaints are against the traffic police officers who conduct themselves in uncivil manner. We continue to urge you to conduct yourselves in a civil way because there is no room for bad behaviour in this service,” he said.

He said traffic officers present the face of the police urged that they handle the public with utmost decorum.

The commission plans to vet more than 1,000 OCPDs and their deputies from the end of June to August across the country.

The first group of OCPDs will be vetted in Coast on June 9. Then the teams will move to Nyanza, Eastern, North Eastern, Rift Valley and finish in Nairobi.

So far, close to 200 officers of the ranks of ACP and above have been vetted in the exercise that started in December aimed at checking police suitability and so far more than 20 have been sacked. Nine others are under investigations over various alleged crimes.
