University campus closed indefinitely

Egerton University’s Njoro campus has been closed indefinitely due to the ongoing staff strike that has paralysed learning at the institution for the second week running.

Fred Mwangangi, UASU Vice Chairman, Egerton University Chapter, said yesterday that the workers would continue with the strike until the Government agrees to release the Sh3.9 billion agreed upon during the 2010 Collective Bargain Agreement.

Students at the institution had earlier threatened to join their lecturers in the strike after talks with the Government collapsed.

Sanitation at the institution deteriorated to an appalling level after staff under the Kenya University Staff Union joined lecturers in the strike.

According to Vincent Hono, chairman, Student Union of Egerton University, before the students were sent home, the situation was slowly degenerating into full-blown crisis after the university’s mess was closed down.
