Kenya: The University of Nairobi has pushed the rivalry among the local universities a notch higher by consolidating its position as the leading institution of higher learning in Kenya.

In a paid advertisement in the local dailies Thursday, the university published a full-page coloured article with the international web ranking that placed it at position one.

The advert titled “UoN confirmed as the best university in the region” highlighted in red the names of the other public universities clearly indicating how far they were in the ranking list.

“The University of Nairobi is the best ranked local and regional university according to the latest ranking of universities by Webometrics,” read the advert in part.

It adds: “It is ranked ninth in Africa out of the 1, 326…Kenyatta University is at position 34 and Strathmore number 36.”

Also highlighted in the ranking are Egerton University at position 65, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) at position 82.

“The University of Nairobi’s performance is the best result posted by local universities since the advent of web ranking in 2004,” reads the advertisement.

Kenyatta University has been listed position two followed by Strathmore University.  Egerton University and JKUAT close that top five categories.

Mount Kenya University (MKU) has been ranked position 12 up from number 20 last year.

Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain.

The latest ranking by Webometrics comes barely weeks after another one conducted by “4 International Colleges and Universities (4ICU),” a higher education international search engine and directory that only reviews accredited universities and colleges in the world.

Under the 4IUC, the UoN was ranked first locally. However, four private universities were ranked among the top 10.

Strathmore University, United States International University (USIU), MKU and Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) were among the top ten categories locally.
