Nyahuru, Kenya: There was pandemonium at an estate in Nyahururu as residents rescued two children who were allegedly being mistreated by their parents for the last three months.

The two, aged two years and two months are reported to have been going for days without food and looked malnourished.

It is alleged that the parents who live at Starehe estate have been beating their eldest daughter and accusing her of not learning to handle household chores.

Angry neighbors stormed the house Wednesday morning and rescued the children before locking their parents inside.

They later called police who arrested them and were locked up at Nyahururu police station.

According to former Nyahururu Mayor Irene Wachuka, the parents were allegedly giving the minors piriton drugs to induce sleep.

“They have been locking the children inside the house as they loitered in town. The youngest baby has not been breastfed either,” she said.

Wachuka added that the parents have been quarreling on daily basis over their children.

She called on the government to take harsh action against the parents.

The minors who were treated at Nyahururu District Hospital were later taken to a children’s home within the town.
