Coast MPs allege plot to sack Labour Cabinet Secretary Kazungu Kambi

By PATRICK BEJA

MOMBASA, KENYA: Coast elected leaders have claimed there is a conspiracy to sack Labour Cabinet Secretary Kazungu Kambi and senior public servants from the region.

The leaders also alleged that Kambi has been a prime target of the political scheme because of his tough stance in discharging his mandate.

They cited the push by the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) chief Francis Atwoli demanding his immediate sacking over the controversial Sh5 billion Tassia housing estate being implemented  by National Social Security Fund (NSSF).

They said the purported conspirators also want to remove the Cabinet Secretary through courts in apparent reference to a court case filed challenging Kambi's academic records and overall conduct in office.

Taita Taveta senator Dan Mwazo, Coast Parliamentary Group (CPG) chairman Gideon Mung’aro, Wundanyi MP Thomas Mwadeghu, Lamu East MP Athman Sharif Ali, Lamu women representative Ms Shakila Abdalla and Nyali MP Awiti Bolo defended Mr Kambi.

“It is now clear senior government officials from the Coast are targeted for systematic removal. Kazungu Kambi is the prime target in this case,” Mwazo claimed.

Addressing a press conference at Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort on Thursday evening, Mr Mwazo said Mr Kambi had been properly vetted by Parliament and it would be unfair to remove him from government due to political pressure.

Mr Mwazo said Coast leaders would defend public servants from the region so long as they were not involved in misconduct adding that they would not allow anybody to harass and embarrass them.

Mr Mung’aro said Coast elected leaders would not allow conspiracies to sack sons and daughters from the region including Mr Kambi.

“We are not going to sit back and watch when Mr Kambi is target of harassment,” Mung’aro warned.

Mr Mung’aro who is also the Kilifi North MP told Mr Atwoli to stop insulting Mr Kambi over the Tassia housing project saga.
