NAROK, KENYA: Fifteen prisoners who sat for last year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) at Narok GK prison and performed well have been moved to Naivasha Maximum Prison to further their education.
The Officer- in-Charge of the prison Alfred Musila said all the candidates who did well will be moved to further their education and undertake relevant courses that would enable them be productive in life after they are released.
“We have decided to take them to Naivasha for them to pursue secondary education and take courses which are relevant. We want them to be good and educated citizens when they complete their jail terms,” said Musila.
He added that his institution will be equipped with necessary facilities including classrooms and reading materials for inmates who want to pursue education to do so unhindered.
“The Government in partnership with the private sector and other donors will provide material including text books and other necessary facilities to enable inmates who want to pursue education and other courses do so unhindered,” said the officer.
Among those moved included Victor Koech who scored 347 marks, Boniface Too 321 marks and Cosmas Koech who got 298 marks.
Too who came second and who spoke on behalf of the inmates said they were elated that they have made progress to change their lives which were miserable when they were admitted at the corrective institution a few years ago.
“We leave Narok GK Prison happier. Not as sad as the day we were admitted here. We were then considered bad people in the society but that has now changed after what we did,” said an emotional Too who also asked the public to change their perception about prisoners.
He said inmates are normal human beings who unfortunately found themselves on the wrong side of the law and said their stay in prison has changed their lives for the better.
