Suspected teenage-robber shot dead in Kakamega

KAKAMEGA, KENYA: A teenager has been shot dead by police in Juakali estate Kakamega town Tuesday morning after he was caught robbing residents together with other members of a gang.

Kakamega OCPD Fredrick Lai said the unidentified teenager who was between 17 and 20 years was shot dead by police who were on patrol after they were alerted by the screams from the people who were being robbed.

“They managed to steal 7 gas cylinders of 6kgs each and several 13kg gas cylinders and other house hold items from different households,”

The shop owner, Peter Karanja told the Standard that while he was asleep in the shop he heard a bang at the door and then a struggle where he woke up he realized they were thieves.

They attacked him quickly before he could do anything and injured him with a blunt object where they beat him several times.

According to the OCPD Lai the dead boy was in possession of a motorcycle battery, a machete, a mining head torch and packets of condoms.

“He did not have any identification documents although the victims identified him as one of the people who raided them,” Lai said.

The gang was composed of about gang of 8 – 10 people and the rest managed to escape in the shoot-out.

The body of the dead suspect was taken to the Kakamega general hospital mortuary as investigations continued.

According to the OCPD the same gang attempted to carjack a motorist a few meters from where the thug was shot dead but he sped off.
