WEST POKOT, KENYA:  Traders in West Pokot County have been warned against selling balloons to children below the age of five after two kids reportedly died from swallowing them.

Mnagei Member of County Assembly (MCA) James Kapelion said two children below the age of five died a few days apart after swallowing pieces of burst balloons as they tried to inflate them using their mouths.

Kapelion pointed out that the the children choked to death in their homes within Kapenguria constituency and advised parents to be watchful.

The MCA expressed concern that many children had obtained money from their parents this holiday season to buy the balloons whose sales are usually high during the festive season.

Most people also use the inflatable rubber to decorate their homes during the Christmas and new year festivities.

“I want to caution traders dealing in the items against selling them to children especially those below the age of five as we can not allow more deaths that could be controlled if we only exercised care,” he said.

The sentiments were backed by several other MCAs, who vowed to ensure that the traders don’t take advantage of the festive season to sell the balloons to children without caring about their safety.

Nominated MCA Simon Chumakemer supported the call, saying failure to heed the advise may force the county assembly to make strict laws to curb irresponsible trading practices.

Fun activities

Kapenguria branch Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry chairman Richard Mwareng also called on traders to desist from selling commodities that could be harmful to children.

Mwareng’ instead advised them to sell the objects to children who can handle them.

He also advised parents to look after their children carefully especially during the Christmas festivities as there as they involve themselves in various fun activities, some of which may compromise their safety.
