KENYA: Kenyatta University (KU) took the overall trophy in the athletics contest after dominating this year’s edition of the Kenya University Sports Association (Kusa) national championships held in Eldoret over the weekend.
The champions collected a total of 35 medals to emerge the heroes during the games that brought together more than 30 higher learning institutions –– both public and private.
International Florence Wasike, who is pursuing her Sports Science degree course at the university put the institution ahead of the rest after winning ten gold medals before the curtain folded on the two-day championship.
The sprinter won all the sprints up to 800m as well as taking 400m hurdles, Long jump, Shot Putt and the two relay races.
In the medal tally, KU collected 19 gold, eight silver and eight bronze medal while Mount Kenya University (MKU) managed a total of 11 silverware to win the runner-up slot.
Low-key championship
They collected five gold, five silver and two bronze in the low-key championship that started on Friday at the University of Eldoret, formerly Chepkoilel Campus.
All the gold medals for the private university were won by versatile Sheila Kandie, a third year Information Science student from Kapsait in Marakwet after topping in women’s 10,000m, 5,000m, 3,000m and 1,500metres.
Host UOE finished in position three with 13 medals (three gold, three silver and seven bronze) while Kabarak was fourth with six medals ––three gold, one silver and two bronze while Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) had five medals –– three silver and two bronze.
Kusa Chairman Paul Tuitoek said the association will pick a team from the championship to represent Kenya during the regional colleges games to be held in Uganda next year.
Other games were ongoing yesterday at Moi University’s main campus and the University of Eldoretincluding football and volleyball.
