County revokes all land licences over grabbing claims

Nyandarua County government has cancelled all temporary land occupation licences issued by the defunct local authorities.

The government has asked the owners to surrender them to the county headquarters for scrutiny.

Governor Daniel Waithaka said the move had been necessitated by the realisation of massive land grabbing in the area.

He said the government was in talks with the National Land Commission to ensure that all public land in the hands of private individuals was surrendered.

“We have asked all those people who had been given these licences to take them back to the county government. This is to enable us embark on a serious scrutiny,” he said.

Waithaka said most of the public land, especially in Ol Kalou, had been grabbed. “It is becoming impossible for us to plan the town’s development agenda as most of the land has been grabbed. We have to bring the perpetrators to book even if it means moving to court,” he said.

The governor was speaking in his Ol Kalou office after meeting with a group of investors yesterday.
